Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who goes to Le Ja Meri Duain Pardes, sang this beautiful song for Dilip Kumar and Nargis starrer ‘Deedar’. The song captures the sense of isolation that one feels when a loved one passes away. Actor Shah Rukh must have felt the same sentiment when he saw his Lata didi go on her last journey.
On the evening of 6 February, Shivaji Park in Mumbai was thronged by dignitaries and common fans. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, everyone bowed their heads in respect. They were paying their last respects to everyone’s beloved Lata didi and were saying their last goodbyes.
When Bollywood star Shahrukh reached for the last salute, he raised his hand in prayer. He prayed for Lata didi’s soul to rest in peace, momentarily removed his mask and blew the wind. He touched her feet and folded hands to express his love and respect.

Islamic tradition of blowing the wind
According to Islamic traditions, whenever a person prays, he raises his hands to the chest and asks Allah for whatever he wants. This dua can be anything: for one’s well being, for a job or for peace to the soul. We have seen such pictures in movies. Even before the body of Lata Mangeshkar, Shahrukh did the same thing. Like millions of his fans, he prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
When Shahrukh was praying with his hands raised, he had a black mask on his face. He prayed for about 12 seconds, removed his mask, bowed slightly and blew on Lata didi’s body.
Some said that Shah Rukh spat when he was actually blowing air. Haryana BJP IT cell head Arun Yadav also raised this question while sharing a video on Twitter.
From a religious point of view, this method of prayer is quite common. In mosques and dargahs, we have seen that parents ask Maulana or Mufti to pray for their children. This can and is done for adults as well. Dua can be made for anyone. Wind blowing is also common in Tantric rituals.
The BJP leader faced backlash on social media as people started pointing out that the dua was followed by a gust of wind to drive away evil spirits and accused him of starting the controversy from a solemn moment.

What do Islamic scholars say?
Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli, member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), says that one blows air after dua to protect one from illness or evil eye. It is said that when the wind blows on someone, prayers reach that person.
Another Islamic scholar Mufti Amjad also says that the Quran mentions blowing air to relieve one’s pain.
However, Maulana Khalid Rashid said that the wind blows only for the living and not for the dead after dua. Maulana Khalid Rashid said that just because Shah Rukh Khan is a star, it should not be associated with religion.
On Sunday, Shah Rukh and his manager Pooja Dadlani paid their last respects to the late singer at her funeral at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Shah Rukh paid her floral tributes, prayed for her and touched her feet. Shah Rukh Khan has been away from the limelight after his son Aryan Khan was allegedly arrested in a drugs case last year. Aryan was later released on bail.
