Amid the Hijab row in Karnataka, state Congress president DK Shivakumar on Tuesday accused the BJP of instigating the issue and called out the government for failing to control the violence.
Speaking to India Today, Shivakumar said, “BJP is instigating the entire issue. Today you see that a saffron flag was put in place of the Tricolor in Shimoga. Firing is going on. They are not able to control the institutions.”
Shivakumar said he has appealed to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to close the colleges for one week and let things settle down.

“We told the CM that you just made it into a law and order problem. Give holiday to the colleges for a week. Let the things settle down. Peace has to be restored,” Shivakumar said.
The Karnataka government has ordered the closure of all high schools and colleges for the next three days.
‘Will give evidence of Tricolor being removed’
When asked about the Alleged incident of the Tricolor being replaced with a saffron flag at a college in Shimoga district, Shivakumar said it was a shameful incident.
“The National Flag is the pride of our country. Today it was brought down and a saffron flag was put in its place. Entire world is looking at Karnataka. It’s a shameful event,” he said.
The video shared on social media platforms shows a boy at a college in Shimoga climbing up an empty pole and hoisting a saffron flag. However, the video clips do not show the Tricolour. According to local authorities, there was no flag hoisted on the pole today.
However, Shivakumar claimed that the Tricolor was up there on the pole and it was replaced by the saffron flag.
“I will share the visuals where the Tricolor is being replaced,” Shivakumar said.
BJP demands proof
Shivakumar also tweeted that the National Flag was brought down in Shimoga. “The situation in some Karnataka educational institutions has gone so out of hand that in one case the National flag was replaced by a saffron flag. I think the affected institutions should be closed for a week to restore law and order. Teaching can continue online, ” Shivakumar said.
To this, the BJP asked the Congress leader to provide evidence where the National Flag was replaced by the saffron flag.
